But what do the identifiers 10W and 40 actually stand for?
10W stands for the fluidity in winter (for the W). The number 10 stands for a certain flow property in winter. The lower the number in front of the W, the better the flow properties at cold temperatures and during a cold start. A 5W-30 engine oil therefore has better flow properties than a 10W-40 engine oil. This excuses itself, however, with the fact that above all more modern and energy-efficient motors get by with lower viscosities.
The number 40 stands for the viscosity of the oil at a temperature of 100 degrees. Again, the following applies: the lower the number, the lower the viscosity at a temperature of 100 degrees. Accordingly, a 10w40 engine oil is thicker than a 0W-30 engine oil
